Beatrice Kristi Laus (born 3 June 2000), also known as Bea Kristi or professionally as beabadoobee, is a Filipino-British indie singer-songwriter. Since 2018, she has released 5 extended plays under Dirty Hit, and is set to support The 1975 on the UK leg of their Music for Cars Tour in February 2020 as well as their Notes on a Conditional Form tour of North America in April 2020. As of August 2019, Beabadoobee has over 36 million accumulative streams on Spotify.

Kristi was nominated for the Rising Star Award at the 2020 Brit Awards, and was predicted as a breakthrough act for 2020 in an annual BBC poll of music critics, Sound of 2020.

Early life

Laus was born in Iloilo City, Philippines on 3 June 2000 and moved to London with her parents at the age of 3. She grew up in West London listening to OPM (original Pinoy music) as well as pop and rock music from the 1980s. While she was a teenager, she listened to indie rock including Karen O, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Florist and Alex G. She attended Hammersmith Academy for her sixth form education. Kristi spent seven years learning to play the violin, before getting her first guitar second-hand at the age of 17. She taught herself how to play the instrument using YouTube tutorials. She was inspired by Kimya Dawson and the Juno soundtrack to start making music.

Career

2017–2019: Lice, Patched Up, Loveworm and Space Cadet

The first song Kristi wrote on her guitar was “Coffee”. She released the song as well as a cover of Karen O’s “The Moon Song” in September 2017. “Coffee” gained over 300,000 views on YouTube, as well as the attention of Dirty Hit Records. This was followed by the release of her debut EP Lice in March 2018 and her second EP Patched Up in December 2018.

In January 2019, Kristi was placed with Billie Eilish on NME’s list of “Essential New Artists for 2019”.

In early 2019, Kristi released her third EP titled Loveworm. In July 2019, Kristi released an acoustic version of the EP and titled it Loveworm (Bedroom Sessions). As of August 2019, Kristi reached over 36 million streams on Spotify according to The Prelude Press.

In September 2019, she commenced her first tour supporting Clairo on her Immunity Tour. Kristi is signed to the record label Dirty Hit, where she released her fourth EP, Space Cadet in October 2019. The five-track EP included songs like “She Plays Bass”, “I Wish I Was Stephen Malkmus” and the title track. Kristi made the front cover of NME on 25 October 2019.

Beabadoobee was shortlisted for the Rising Star Award at the 2020 Brit Awards, an award previously crowned by names like Adele, Florence and the Machine, Ellie Goulding and Sam Smith.

In November 2019, Kristi released a pair of Spotify Singles, one being a cover of “Don’t You Forget About Me” by Simple Minds as well as a version of “She Plays Bass” recorded in Abbey Road Studios in London.

In December 2019, Kristi was longlisted in the annual BBC poll of music critics, Sound of 2020.

2020–present: Debut album

In February 2020, Kristi performed at the 2020 NME Awards after winning the Radar Award. She will support labelmates The 1975 on the UK leg of their Music for Cars Tour in February 2020, as well as their Notes on a Conditional Form tour of North America in April 2020. Kristi wrote on Instagram that she would be releasing an album this year. Kristi has told Vice that she plans on making film soundtracks in the future, as they heavily inspired her to make music.
